How to record wildlife with iNaturalist

Join us for a fully guided, hands-on workshop to learn how to use iNaturalist, a free app which helps you to record and share your wildlife observations easily throughout the day. Whether you're a nature newbie or an experienced wildlife enthusiast, this app is user-friendly and has become an important tool for communities to contribute to understanding and conserving local wildlife.

Experienced guides from Wild Intrigue will show you how to set up and use the app to identify plants and animals, take great photos, and contribute to wildlife conservation - using just your smartphone or tablet! As part of the workshop, you will learn about the importance of local wildlife recording, gain experience in submitting records in the field, connect with other local nature lovers, and see how your observations help to protect local nature.

The workshop will begin at St Mary's Heritage Centre with a short talk on the value of wildlife recording, and how to contribute to an exciting new Gateshead Riverside Park project on iNaturalist. Afterwards, you'll join your guide on a short walk to Riverside Park to use the app and begin making wildlife records!

Everyone welcome, most suited to adults and ages 14+.

What you'll learn:

  • tips for taking clear and useful wildlife photos
  • the impact of your observations on biodiversity and conservation projects

What to bring:

  • smartphone or tablet with the free iNaturalist app installed
  • notebook and pen for any extra notes or observations you'd like to make (optional)
  • comfortable clothing and footwear: Suitable for exploring outdoors
  • a drink/ snacks
