Guided Tyne Derwent Way Hike

Feeling ready for an adventure? Join our experienced and knowledgeable guides for a full-day hike along the Tyne Derwent Way, a beautiful urban route packed with rich heritage and wonderful wildlife to discover!

The Tyne Derwent Way is a 9-mile route which runs from the spectacular centre of Gateshead Quayside, all the way to the beautiful Derwent Valley, following the Rivers Tyne and Derwent.

Along the way we will take in the historic architecture of the Quayside, from St Mary's Heritage Centre to the Tyne's seven famous bridges, Dunston Staiths, historic ironworks and much more. Intertwined within the human history of the route, from Roman origins to a rich industrial landscape, and to present day, there is a rich natural heritage along the route to explore. Your guides will introduce you to the incredible seasonal wildlife of the route, from wading birds feeding in the River Tyne such as Curlew, to possible encounters with Red Kite and Kingfisher, and trees and plants throughout this beautiful green corridor.

At the end of the route (just south of Rowlands Gill) you will be required to return via public transport. There are regular buses to Newcastle and Gateshead at the end of the route, and your guide will be on hand to assist and ensure you get home safely! If you would like some advice on pubic transport before booking, please let us know.

Please note that we have allowed 7 hours for this route to allow for a lunch break and stops along the way to enjoy wildlife encounters. These hikes are open to adults only, if you are interested in bringing along for a hike please contact us.
