Take a trip to the Tyne Derwent Way
As warmer days and lighter nights arrive, why not take a trip to Gateshead's riverside?
The Tyne Derwent Way is a nine-mile route running from the centre of Gateshead along the rivers Tyne and Derwent. You may already be familiar with this existing route. The cycle and walking path begins at St Mary's Heritage Centre before running though Gateshead Riverside Park, Dunston Staiths, and past the Metrocentre where it turns down the Derwent and passes through the beautiful Derwent Valley, ending at Gibside.
The route has been granted funding to make it safe, accessible, and vibrant for all. It will officially launch on Thursday 11 April, with free activities at St Mary's Heritage Centre, the Land of Oak and Iron Heritage Centre and Gibside. This summer will see a full programme of activities for all along the route celebrating heritage, culture, and nature.
This work to revitalise the Tyne Derwent Way is being carried out by Gateshead Riverside Partnership - a collaboration between Gateshead Council, the National Trust, Newcastle University, Northumbria University and Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust.
