Green Team - Wildflower Meadow Making at St Mary's Heritage Centre

Currently there are no instances scheduled for this event

Join the Tyne Derwent Way Green Team every Wednesday afternoon throughout November and December as we continue turning the churchyard at St Mary's Heritage Centre into a flourishing wildflower meadow.

This hands-on volunteer event is open to everyone — no experience needed! Together, we'll restore natural habitats, support local wildlife, and make a real difference in the heart of our community.

About the project

If you've visited St Mary's recently, you might have noticed the churchyard looking a little wilder. That's no accident — it's the start of a brand new wildflower meadow!

Earlier this year, we let the grassland grow for the first time in years. The results have been amazing: our Green Team volunteers have already spotted Northern Marsh Orchids, Small Skipper Butterflies, and Cinnabar Moth caterpillars for the first time ever!

Now, we're taking the next step by raking, scarifying, and seeding the meadow with a mix of native wildflowers and grasses, helping even more species to thrive.

This is part of our Urban Rewilding initiative, in partnership with Wild Intrigue — restoring natural processes and biodiversity in our urban spaces.

Why it matters

Over 97% of UK meadows have been lost in the past century. By restoring even small pockets of grassland in our towns and cities, we can help pollinators, birds, and insects find food and shelter — and bring nature closer to where people live.

Come along, get involved, and help us grow something beautiful for wildlife and the community alike.
