Enjoy a bike ride on the Tyne Derwent Way this half-term, or bring your bike down to the Staiths Space for our Dr Bike session.
February half-term is just around the corner, and we've lined up some adventures in nature and heritage along the Tyne Derwent Way for all the family, whatever the weather and all for free!

From relaxing in a hammock to getting your bike checked over at the Staiths Space, we really do think there's something for everyone.

Discover it your way

If you want something self-guided this half-term, why not walk or wheel a bit of the Tyne Derwent Way? We love parking in the new car park on Staithes Road, Dunston, and walking along the Tyne towards St Mary's, or heading to the Land of Oak and Iron and exploring the Derwent Valley. For those of you feeling intrepid... why not walk the full (nearly) nine miles from the Quayside to Gibside? Don't forget to share your photos and thoughts with us on social media or at [email protected]

It's been nearly a year since we printed 5,000 copies of '48 things to do along the Tyne Derwent Way', an activity book bursting with facts, activities and, of course, things to do along the Tyne Derwent Way. Do you have your copy? Remaining copies are limited now - are you one of the thousands of people who got your hands on one? If not, there are a few copies left at St Mary's Heritage Centre so come along when we're open on the Wednesday and grab your copy before you go. Or you can always download a copy online.

Monday 23 February: Climate Champions at the Land of Oak and Iron

We're partnering with the Land of Oak and Iron and Wild Intrigue to put on a free, guided wildlife discovery event - children receive their own backpack full of nature goodies to take home! Aimed at key stage 2 children (aged 7 - 12) plus their grown-up.

It's looking like this event will be fully booked by the time this blog goes out - although you can keep an eye on cancellations. If there's interest in future events, we'd love to run this again - let us know at [email protected]

Tuesday 24 February: Family Fun with Stomping Grounds NE, 10am to 12pm

Play games, learn about nature, splash in the mud, relax in a hammock, build dens, listen to stories, sing songs, firelight and cook, develop and grow as a family and as a community.  Book your place.

Wednesday 25 February - Wednesdays at St Mary's (as usual)

We always open at St Mary's each Wednesday, but we know that term-time isn't always practical, so this is your chance to come along, see Gateshead's mother church and have a cuppa from our pop-up cafĂ©. See what's on at St Mary's.

Thursday 26 February - Staiths Space opening, crafts and Dr Bike

Rounding off the week is our usual Thursdays at the Staiths Space, 11am to 3pm, with drop in craft activities 3pm to 5pm. Gateshead Council's Active Travel Team are planning a Dr Bike session for half-term! Bring along your bike 1 to 3 pm for a free basic check and minor repairs if needed. Get your bike ready for spring/summer!

We can't wait to see you along the Tyne Derwent Way this half-term!
